Million Hours
Whether you are hosting young
students at your facilities, volunteering at a local science
center or visiting a school, don't forget to record your hours
as part of the 2009 'One
Million Hours Initiative' at eweek.org.
We want to show other professions and the world the power of our
volunteers!

It's All About the E
The 2009 Engineers Week poster
reflects the role of engineers (E) in putting to work everything
from ideas to progress.
Two new t-shirts reflect that theme.
One emphasizes the E in green. Another –
calling out the E in science – is a great shirt for engineer
volunteers working with educators and participating in science
fairs. Check out the new 'Engineers Make It
Work' shirts, as well as our 2009 t-shirts featuring the poster
image, and a variety of other useful products in the online
store at
www.eweek.org.

Engineer Your Life
If you're looking for an
outreach opportunity with high impact and a small time
commitment, consider volunteering for a college fair as part of
Engineer Your Life (EYL). EYL
is the movement to interest college-bound high school girls in
engineering. The National Engineers Week Foundation serves as
the EYL Secretariat and is seeking volunteers to host the EYL
tables at two dozen college outreach fairs starting February 5
in Pittsburgh. The fairs feature college admissions and resource
experts for high school students, counselors and parents.
All materials and exhibit fees are sponsored
by EYL! There are even handouts that can be branded by your
organization! In addition to Pittsburgh,
February fairs are Atlanta, Miami, and Louisville.
Fairs run into May. See the full schedule and venues
here. and if you can volunteer in your area, contact us at
engineeringwomen@eweek.org.

Ride Metro to Family Day!
The annual
Discover Engineering Family Day at the National
Building Museum in Washington, DC, is February
21, and IEEE-USA has sponsored the printing of large posters and
dioramas, placed inside rail cars and stations to announce the
event. The ads will be in place next week,
just in time for the massive inauguration crowds to see the word
"engineering." With National Engineers Week
Foundation, IEEE-USA is a major sponsor of Family Day, with
additional funding from Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems, the
Project Management Institute, and the Semiconductor Industry
Association.
The Georgia
Engineering Alliance, in collaboration with IBM and Georgia Tech
Women in Engineering, is hosting a day of activities for 300
middle school girls on February 14. Events
will include hands-on activities, an engineer's informational
forum, an essay contest and a parent's program. Also included is
a luncheon with a keynote from Marsha Anderson Bomar, founder
and president of Street Smarts. Contact is
Kathy.belcher@gaengineers.com.
The San
Joaquin Valley (California) Section of the Society of
Petroleum Engineers, Kern County Superintendent of Schools
School-to-Career Program, and Kern County Museum are once again
hosting Engineers Day at the museum, offering local high school
students the opportunity to find out just what engineers and
geologists do. The 2-day event expects to host 600 students this
year with an open Exhibition Area of projects, industry
demonstrations, hands-on activities, and industry
representatives available to answer questions.
Los
Alamos (New Mexico) High School DECA Cafeteria,
Wednesday, February 18, 2009, 4:30 to 7:00 PM,
will see the 7th annual Discover E event
highlighting interesting, interactive and fun engineering,
technology, science, and math demonstrations. Engineering and
scientific professionals from local technical societies,
businesses, along with advanced students and Girl Scouts,
volunteer to provide interactive demonstrations for northern New
Mexico's kindergarten through high school students. Please
contact Dr. Bev Aikin (bevaikin@lanl.gov,
505-667-1679) if you need more information.

The National Engineers Week Foundation coalition comprises more
than 75 engineering, professional, and technical societies and
more than 50 corporations and government agencies. The coalition
is dedicated to sustaining and growing a dynamic engineering
profession by ensuring a diverse and well-educated future
engineering workforce, increasing understanding of and interest
in engineering and technology careers among young students, and
promoting pre-college literacy in math and science.
Among the oldest of America's professional outreach
efforts, the coalition also raises public understanding and
appreciation of engineering contributions to society through
year-round innovative programming and celebration.
